Comitatus S. Ludovici ad Open Restaurata African-American Schoolhouse apud Faustum Park

St. Louis County, MO (March 23, 2023) - Join St. Louis County Parks and Recreation at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2023, for the grand opening of African Schoolhouse #4 in Faust Park Historic Village.

African Schoolhouse #4 is the only known surviving log African American school in St. Louis County. The one room schoolhouse, built in 1893, was donated to St. Louis County Parks. In 2021, it was moved from private land on Wild Horse Creek Road to the Historic Village at Faust Park where it was restored by St. Louis County Parks staff and the St. Louis County Parks
Foundation. The schoolhouse was in use until 1950.

“Efforts by the St. Louis County Parks Department to preserve this schoolhouse have been ongoing for more than 30 years. Now, we’re honored to reopen African Schoolhouse #4 in Faust Park’s Historic Village where it can provide context to an important and painful time in our history – when children were taught in different schools based on the color of their skin,” County Executive Dr. Sam Page said.

Dr. Page will be joined by Director of Parks Brian Schaffer, St. Louis County Parks Foundation President Mark Ohlendorf, members of the County Council, and Doris Frazier, former substitute teacher at African Schoolhouse #4.
